| COLLECTION | Special Collections |
| DESCRIPTION | Pictured is the southeast corner of the South Commercial & Ferry Street intersection in Salem, Marion County, Oregon, about 1950. The 4-story Chemeketa Hotel was built at this corner in 1869 and included 28 chimneys which removed smoke from the fireplaces in 125 rooms & 34 suites. There was a mansard roof, and a partially covered sidewalk. It was renamed the Willamette Hotel in 1891, and the Marion Hotel in 1910. It was extensively remodeled at various times and by the time this photo was taken the chimneys and mansard roof were gone and with the 1st floor large windows the appearance is changed greatly. It was later expanded to take in practically the whole block. It was destroyed by fire on November 12, 1971. The picture is from the Salem Area Chamber of Commerce collection. |
