| DESCRIPTION | This photo of the old Oregon State Capitol was from the Oregon State Highway Department. The cornerstone for this Capitol, Oregon's second, was laid on October 8, 1873. The building was patterned somewhat after the Capitol in Washington D.C. and faced west toward the heart of Salem. It had hollow metal girders supporting a massive coppper dome and two-story porticoes faced with Corinthian columns. There were symmetrical wings on either side of the entrance and a great stairway going up to the entrance. It was destroyed by a fire, which started in the basement, on April 25,1935. The fire spread rapidly and little was saved. Pieces of the columns were found dumped in various parts of the city for many years afterwards, and some have been incorporated into exhibits in front of the Marion County Historical Society, and on the grounds of the new State Capitol. |
