| DESCRIPTION | From "Oregon Main Street: A Rephotographic Study" by James Norman, page 27. SW First Avenue, looking south from Ash, Portland, Oregon, 1994. The Skidmore Fountain stands at the center of this photo. when constructed it was the heart of Portland and ws superbly sited so that five streets radiated from its base. Desighned by national prominent New york sulptor Olin L. Warner, the octagonal granite structure collects water in its lower troughs from spouting lions heads. It was partially bequeathed by Stephen Skidmore as a convenience of horses, men and dogs. The brick wall on the left was constructed in 1983 and is on the site once occupied by the Ankeny and Lewis & Fletcher Block. The three story building on the right is the New Market Theater Building which was restored in 1982-83 and now houses restaurants and small shops. The corner two-story New Market Block North Wing was destroyed in 1956 but its cast-iron arcade was reconstructed with a fiberglass reproduction in 1984. SEE ALSO NOMS3. |
