COLLECTIONSpecial Collections
DESCRIPTIONFrom "Oregon Main Street: A Rephotographic Study" by James Norman, page 26. SW First Avenue, looking south from Ash, Portland, Oregon, circa 1895. The Skidmore (1888) fountain stands at the center of this photo. When constructed it was the heart of Portland and was superbly sited so that five streets radiated from its base. Designed by nationally-prominent New York sculptor Olin L. Warner, the octagonal granite structure collects water it its lower troughs from soputing lions heads. It was partially bequeathed by Stephen Skidmore as a convenience of horses, men and dogs. The three-story New Market Theater Building (1872) located on the right side of the photograph had a two-hundred foot long interior arcade lined with produce stalls on the first floor, a 1200 seat heater on the second floor, and a cafe on the third level. It was turned into a warehouse and finally a parking garage in the 1970's. The Ankeny and Lewis & Fletcher Block is on the left of the photo. SEE ALSO NOMS4.
