TITLEJason Lee House at Mission Mill Village, Salem, Oregon
COLLECTIONSpecial Collections
DESCRIPTIONThis picture was taken of the Jason Lee House after it had been moved to Mission Mill Village and had extensive work done on it to restore it to original appearance. The house was originally located on the north bank of Mill Creek where the early Methodist missionaries had set up a water-powered combination lumber and grist mill. The house was the earliest known frame building in Salem and was constructed in 1841 of milled lumber and built in a simple, federal style of architecture. It is also said to have been built at 960 Broadway where indeed it was located in 1930 but would not even have been recognizable as the same building. It was moved in 1963 to a temporary location on Front Street before being moved to Mission Mill Village. The photo is from the Salem Area Chamber of Commerce Collection.
