| TITLE | Chemeketa House aka Marion Hotel, 1871 |
| COLLECTION | Ben Maxwell |
| DESCRIPTION | At the time that this photo was taken in approximately 1871 the hotel pictured was known as Chemeketa House. Later the name was changed to the Marion Hotel, the name by which it was known during the longest period of its history. The hotel was located on State, S. Commercial and Ferry Streets. For the early years of its existence and until the fire which almost destroyed it in the late 1950's or early 1960's, it was Salem's largest and most prestigious hotel. In this early photograph horse-drawn carriages are parked in front of the hotel on S. Commercial Street. Boardwalks run along both sides of the building. |
