| DESCRIPTION | This is the Clackamas County courthouse in Oregon City as seen in February 1960. Clackamas County received its name from the Clackamas Indians, a Chinookan tribe, living along the river. The remnants of the tribe were moved to the Grand Ronde Reservation. It was formerly a large tribe. Clackamas County was one of the original four districts of early Oregon. It was created July 5, 1843, and at present has an area of 1890 square miles. Oregon City was laid out and named in 1842 by Dr. John McLoughlin, chief factor of the Hudson's Bay Company, who located his land claim there in 1829. After 1840 the place grew as a political and trade center. Oregon City post office was established March 29, 1847, with David Hill as the first postmaster. |
