COLLECTIONBen Maxwell
DESCRIPTIONThis photograph is identified as being of the Salem, Oregon post office when it was located at the Smith Bldg. c1888. In 1891 the post office was at the SW corner of Commercial & Ferry streets; presumably that was the same location. The people are identified as (l to r), Ben Taylor, Capt. S.S. Scott, Zadie Palmer, Dick Dearborn, Scott Boswell & Glen Turner. The directory does identify Scott Bozorth (sic) as Asst Postmaster, Zaidee (sic) Palmer as general delivery clerk, and Taylor and Scott as carriers in 1891. Mail did arrive from the south @ 7:30 a.m. & 1:20 p.m; and from the north @11 a.m. & 9:30 p.m. in 1891. The office was open 7:00 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. weekdays and from 8:45-9:00 a.m. & 1:30-1:45 p.m. on Sundays.
