| TITLE | Man seated at Skidmore Fountain in Portland, Oregon, 1941 |
| COLLECTION | Ben Maxwell |
| DESCRIPTION | Pictured is a man seated on the edge of the Skidmore Fountain at First and Ankeny Streets in Portland, Oregon, on November 20, 1941. A description of the fountain before it arrived in Portland gave the following information in 1888: The base is octagonal, over 20 feet across, of Quincy Maine granite, which is the finest stone in the U.S. On four of the sides will be drinking basins for animals, and on the other four sides, steps to a level surface, two feet in width, where people can go to drink from jets around the lower basin. A further description follows: There is a bronze basin, eight feet in diameter, held aloft by a shaft of polished granite and the uplifted arms of two bronze maidens of classic form and drapery. This figure is called a caryatid, from similar statues of female figures used as suppporting pillars in a Greek temple. The basin is 11 feet above the street, and water flowing over its edge falls into an octagonal granite pool, 20 feet in diameter. On four sides of this lower pool are horse troughs. The water reaches the horse troughs through spouts, in the form of lions' heads, on the sides of the granite pool. |
