DESCRIPTIONThis monument is located atop Coxcomb Hill in Astoria, Oregon. It is the Astor Monument, a cylindrical 125-feet high monument, as seen in September 1960. The spiral frieze is 525 feet long and nearly seven feet wide. It was executed by Electus D. Litchfield and Attilio Pusterla. The column is a prominent landmark. Within the column is a circular staircase leading to an observation platform near the top. The column honors Captain Robert Gray, discoverer of the Columbia River; Meriwether Lewis and William Clark; and John Jacob Astor, the founder of Astoria. The column was dedicated July 22, 1926.
