| TITLE | Eugene Breyman home on Court Street, Salem, Oregon, 1887 |
| COLLECTION | Ben Maxwell |
| DESCRIPTION | Ben P. Taylor, who was a Post office clerk in 1887, is riding a penny farthing bike in front of Eugene Breyman's house. This two-story home was originally built on the north side of Court Street between Church and Cottage in downtown Salem. As can be seen it was Victorian in style with its turret, conical roof, and roof cresting. There are bay windows on both sides, brackets under all eaves, grill work in front of the 2nd story windows over the porch, and many stairs leadking up the the entrance. Interestingly, there are no chimneys visible in this photo, or in a later one after the house was moved (see colsl09). There is a tiny dormer-like projection in the tower with a circular window, and high windows for the basement. The lot is surrounded by a wrought iron fence, giving it almost a picket-fence look. The tower was rmoved prior to 1914 and the house was moved c 1912 to Summer Street. Mr. Breyman was born in 1834 in Germany and with his brother Werner became very successful businessmen in the Willamette Valley. He died in 1903 in Salem. |
