DESCRIPTION
This photo is of the "City of Salem", one of many steamboats which plied the Willamette and other rivers in the northwest in the early days. They carried freight and passengers on the Willamette between Portland, Salem, Albany, and even Eugene when the water was high enough. Excursions were popular pastimes in the 1880's and 1890's. The all day trip to Portland was an enjoyable experience and meals were served on the boat. The "City of S alem, was built in Portland in 1875 and used on the Willamette until 1895. Two locomotive headlights on the front forward cabin allowed loading and unloading to go on at night.
