Sidewheeler "Wallamet" built at Canemah, Oregon, in 1853
This photo is taken from an original daguerrotype and is of the US Mail boat "Wallamet" which was built at Canemah on the Willamette RIver in Oregon in 1853. It was a sidewheeler built after the fashion of the Mississippi River packet boats and was 150 feet long and carried 272 tons. It was unprofitable though on both the upper Willamette and the Columbia River between Astoria and Portland and was transferred to California the following year. It was unsuccessful there too.
