This photo of the steamer "Alert" was taken at Alleghany Landing on the Millicoma River in Coos County on the southern Oregon coast.. There were two steamboats named " Alert", one a sternwheeler built in Oswego, Oregon in 1865 and wrecked in 1875. It operated between Portland and Oregon City. In 1890 the sternwheeler pictured was built in Bandon on the southern Oregon coast and operated on the southern Oregon rivers until it wrecked in 1919. It was 69 feet long and carried 96 tons. Several of the men and a woman in this group appear to be membes of a masonic order.
