DESCRIPTION
The demolition of the old Salem City Hall began in August and continued through September of 1972. The city offices, police and fire departments moved to the new City Center complex south of downtown Salem. This historic structure, built in 1893 at the corner of High and Chemeketa Streets, was torn down after numerous efforts to save it. Preservation and reconstruction to bring it up to code proved too expensive for interested groups.
