DESCRIPTION
Some of the 80 state policemen called to Oregon State Penitentiary, 2605 State Street in Salem, Oregon, march into the prison administration building where they underwent briefings before being sent to various guardposts along the institution walls. Marion County Sheriff deputies also were called in along with all off-duty prison employees to help maintain security at the height of the 15-hour riot on March 9, 1968. Some wore fatigues and others were in dress uniforms. They carried guns and wore hardhats.
