DESCRIPTION
This is a photograph of the south Dillard Bridge, a covered bridge near Dillard in Douglas County. The town of Dillard, Oregon is located along the Umpqua River. A gravel road leads to the covered bridge in this photograph. The sides of the bridge are open, exposing the X-shaped support beams of the Howe truss. Low hills are visible on the other side of the stream. The Dillard Bridge was built in 1918 and was a 2-span bridge. Each span was 144 feet, making the bridge 288 feet in length. The bridge was designed and engineered by the State Highway Commission. Orignally, the bridge had Gothic-style windows along each side. Later, in 1926 the windows were removed and replaced with a long slit the entire length of the bridge. This allowed better views for approaching traffic. The bridge was damaged by high water in 1927 but was not replaced until 1939 with a steel truss span. There was a 3-span covered bridge across the Umpqua River just north of Dillard. That bridge was also built in 1918, but it was replaced in 1942.
