This portrait shows a pensive Edwin Markham, ca. 1921. Markham was born in Oregon City in 1852 and was given the title "Poet Laureate of Oregon" in 1923. Markham's best-known poem is his ""Man With the Hoe"" after the painting by Millet. He died in 1940. His own comment on this photograph was recorded on the back of the proof print: ""I like this one also -- Edwin Markham.""
