Funeral of Oregon's U.S. Senator Charles L. McNary, 1944
This photo was taken at the Oregon State Capitol in Salem, Oregon of the crowd awaiting the funeral procession for Charles L. McNary. McNary was a jurist, statesman and orchardist from Salem, and was Oregon's U.S. Senator for 27 years (1917-1944). He was born June 12, 1874 on a farm near Salem and graduated from Stanford University and Willamette University College of Law. He served in posts at several levels of government and was instrumental in promoting farm and reclamation legislation as Senator. He campaigned briefly for President in 1940, and reluctantly accepted the vice presidential nomination with Republican candidate Wendell Wilkie which lost to Franklin D. Roosevelt. He married Jessie Breyman of Salem in 1902 and after her death in an automobile accidient, he married Cornelia Morton in 1923. He contracted pneumonia after surgery and died in Florida. McNary's funeral took place at the Oregon State Capitol on March 3, 1944.
