DESCRIPTION
The Steel Bridge spanning the Willamette River in Salem, Marion County, Oregon. Dedicated on January 13, 1891, it was also referred to as the "Marion and Polk County Bridge" "Willamette River Bridge" or the "Center Street Bridge" among other names. It replaced the 1886 bridge, which had been the first to span the Willamette River anywhere in Oregon, after the flood of 1890 destroyed the earlier bridge. The 1891 bridge was considered to be of questionable strength and was finally replaced in 1918. This view to the north is prior to the construction of a railroad bridge in 1912 - 1913.
