Workers' housing at Mongold at the Detroit Dam site in Marion County, Oregon, 1953
COLLECTION

DESCRIPTION
This photo is of the workers' housing area known as Mongold at Detroit Dam on the North Santiam River about 50 miles east of Salem, Oregon. Whether by intention or not, it was located below the high water table for the reservoir and was dismantled for salvage in December 1952. It was estimated that ultimately 6,000 people would be housed at the site, with dorms for 800 single men and accommodations for 100 trailers. The contractors did not accept the housing though and constructed housing at nearby Mill City for their officials and employees. At its peak Mongold may have housed 1,000 to 1,200 people. It had been considered expandable from the first and its demise was assured when rising waters inundated the camp site. For further information and other pictures, see the Capital Journal (Salem, Oregon), October 2, 1952.
