Weather station at Valsetz in the Coast Range of Polk County, Oregon, 1958
An unidentified man is pictured here at the weather station in Valsetz. Equipment is situated outside the structure. The photo was taken on March 26, 1958. Valsetz was a company town. After the forest fire of 1910, the Wiliam W. Mitchell Company built a railroad up the Luckiamute River to the summit of the Coast Range and began logging in western Polk County. After the old timber was depleted in the 1970s, the railroad was torn up. In 1984, the town was destroyed and the property added to the Valsetz Tree Farm. The name Valsetz was chosen by the railroad company offiicials and is taken from their name, the Valley & Siletz Railroad.
