DESCRIPTION
This photograph is of a picture of John Gates, the chief engineer for the Oregon Steam Navigation Company for nearly 25 years beginning in 1860. He was born in 1827 in Somerset County, Maine, and came west to California for the gold rush of 1849. During his first ten years with the Oregon Steam Navigation Company he had 27 inventions patented and was responsible for revolutionizing the style of steamboats. He built many of the steamboats used on Oregon rivers in the late 1800's, including one named after him. In 1885 he won election as Mayor of Portland, and served in that capacity until his death in 1888. The original photograph is from the collection of Captain Eckhart.
