Street view, Mitchell, Wheeler County, Oregon, 1963
This is a street view of Mitchell as seen on September 16, 1963. There is a grocery store on the left, followed by Mitchell's Pastime Dine, two empty houses, and the Sidewalk Cafe. The town was named for John Hipple Mitchell, former U.S. senator from Oregon. The community has experienced several catastrophes since its establishment in 1873. In 1884 water rushed over the bluff above the community. In 1899 about half the town was consumed by fire. And in 1904 the town was almost destroyed by a cloudburst and another flood.
