COLLECTION

DESCRIPTION
This is a photograph of a ceremony on the waterfront at Newport in Lincoln County. A boat for carrying passengers is along the side of the dock. A windmill can be seen in the background as well as The Abbey Hotel. .The first Euro-American settlers arrived in the Yaquina Bay area in the 1850s, about the time the Siletz Indian Reservation was created. The town was named Newport in 1866; in 1875 the federal government recognized settlers' claims to the area. In 1893 Lincoln County was created from much of the Siletz Reservation portion of Benton County. In 1952, after much debate, the Lincoln County seat was moved from Toledo to Newport.
