This is the dam at Valsetz in Polk County, Oregon, which was a company town at the summit of the Coast Range. The town was named for the Valley & Siletz Railroad which was built up the Luckiamute River about 1920 and the sawmill was built at the terminus of it. The mill & timber stands passed through vartious owners and became part of Boise Cascade Corporation in 1959. After the old growth timber was depleted in the 1970's the railroad was torn up and in 1984 the company ceased operations and the town was destroyed. This photo was taken in September 1958.
