DESCRIPTION
These are locomotives of the Sumpter Valley Railroad as seen at Baker in Baker County. Constructed in 1892-97 to develop the timber interests of Sumpter Valley and the southeastern Blue Mountains, this narrow gauge line soon became an important factor in the development of ""hard-rock"" mining in the gold area surrounding the towns of Sumpter, Bourne and Granite. As projected, its route was to be through Prairie City, then to Burns and across southeastern Oregon deserts to Lakeview. It was built only to Prairie City, arriving in 1910. The engines burned wood for most of the lines' existence, gulping prodigious quantities, locally cut and piled along the right-of-way. Steam was hard to raise and the grades were steep. But the trains went through, hauling the commerce of mining town, farmland, and logging operation, principally the latter. Passenger runs were discontinued in 1937, and though the line was still making money in 1946, it was abandoned.
