DESCRIPTION
This is a photo of a house in Salem, Oregon, taken by Bob Koval in 1978 as part of a CETA grant project to make a photographic record of historic Salem homes. This house, constructed in 1890 is located at 116 Marion Street NE. The architectural characteristics of this two-story wood-frame house include asymmetrical massing, a complex roof line which includes a hipped roof with intersecting gables, and hipped roof tower. The wrap-around porch has an elaborate frieze of carved spindles, delicate turned posts and curved brackets, and a flat cut balustrade. The gable ends and broad areas of the tower are decorated with fish scale shingles and diamond shaped shingles (on tower). The front door consists of a single light of glass and carved panels. The major windows are single pane, double-hung sash. There is a front lawn with bushes and shrubs in the front of the house. The architectural style is the Queen Anne style with Stick and East Lake elements.
