The Salem, Oregon, flood of 1890, looking toward the northeast. The old Oregon State Capitol building is at the far left, while to the right of it is the First Methodist Church. Behind the Methodist Church is the cupola of Waller Hall, the oldest building at Willamette University. The wooden bridge, which was probably Church Street, is nearly submerged and the water level reaches the roof of the house in the foreground. An 1890 map reveals that Commercial Street was the only one with a covered bridge over the creek, High & Church streets had open bridges, and the other streets did not go through.
