DESCRIPTION
This fireplace is in the home of Dr. Henry John Minthorn, uncle of President Herbert Clark Hoover (1874-1963), in Salem, Oregon. The house is located on the NW corner of Highland and Hazel Avenues in the Highland Neighborhood, but has been extensively remodeled on both the interior and exterior. Dr. Minthorn built the home in 1888, living here with his family for approximately six years while developing the surrounding "Highland Addition" of north Salem and serving as president of the Oregon Land Company and the Salem Street Railway Company. His orphaned nepew, Herbert "Bert" Hoover lived here with the Minthorn family from 1888 until leaving to become a student at the newly opened Stanford University in 1891 where Bert joined Stanford's first graduating class. Herbert Hoover was the 31st president of the United States (1929-33) and is the only U.S. President who lived in Oregon. Before coming to Salem, the Minthorn family and Herbert Hoover lived in Newberg, Oregon.
